If you talk with anyone that has recently moved you’ll likely hear about the stress they experienced during the moving process. But the truth is if you prepare for your move well in advance you can avoid many of the pitfalls the cause people stress along the way.
On the day you decide you’re going to move, start sorting through your belongings to purge yourself of anything you don’t need or use. Throw out anything that is broken and anything that hasn’t been used in over a year. This is the time to get rid of the furniture you never really liked or have grown tired of. You probably have family members that would be thrilled to have it, if not then donate it to charity.
Make the time as you’re packing to clean everything you’re bringing with you. You don’t want to put dirty carpets or rugs into your new home. Curtains and drapes will perform better and look their best with a yearly cleaning as well. If your new home comes with window treatments in place that you love then by all means leave your old ones behind.
All the books you’ve been collecting can be donated to your local library or boxed up and offered for free on Craig’s List or through your local newspaper. Good Will or the Salvation Army will also take whatever you’re willing to donate plus you can claim it as a tax deduction.
The best time to start sorting and purging is long before the actual move. Don’t wait until closer to the time of the move because it will always take far longer than you thought. It’s quite easy to get sidetracked with memorabilia along the way.
Start on one level of the house and proceed from there. Just do one room at a time. Use some boxes to aid in sorting and label them with where they’re going (sell, donate, family, etc). Don’t overlook the closets, cabinets and drawers. It’s remarkable how much stuff we can stow away for that “someday” that never actually comes. It’s a great feeling to downsize! Try it and see for yourself!
