Marsh Tacky Races at Coligny Beach
I have lived on Hilton Head Island for over 9 years now and I did something this past weekend I have never done yet. I went to the Marsh Tacky horse
races, a Gullah tradition, which was held this year at Coligny Beach. It was great- the weather was perfect, sun shining, no wind and close to 70 degrees. The races started at 1PM and my husband, 2 boys and I arrived just after noon. Wow- this was "the place to be"!
We walked by the new interactive fountains at Coligny Beach and saw children playing in the water, soaking wet, laughing and having lots of fun. There were tents set up serving shrimp po boys, grits, and other delicious southern food. We headed towards the beach and there were already hundreds, maybe thousands, of people lined up around the race track. They race the horses 2 at a time.
Boy, can those Marsh Tacky horses run! I found out that the Marsh Tacky horses originally came from Spain and there are only approximatly 300 left- making the Marsh Tacky a very rare horse. I have always loved Coligny Beach but this past Sunday, I fell in LOVE with Coligny Beach. There was so much fun and excitement in the air. We can't wait for next year's races!
