Hilton Head Island Real Estate - Charles Fraser Vision

Hilton Head Island Real Estate - Charles Fraser and his vision for a model resort and residential development is being recognized by the National Association of Home Builders.

South Beach Sea PinesHilton Head Island Real Estate is what it is today because of a vision over 60 years ago by Charles Fraser. Charles Fraser came to Hilton Head Island in 1950 as a logging inspector to harvest timber on the Island. But fortunately for all of us that have fallen in love with this special Island, he had the foresight of preserving the stately live oaks, broad beaches and the lush marshlands. In addition to developing a sought after resort community, he was responsible for bringing the PGA Tour to the Island.

Fraser, who died in a boating accident in 2002, developed Sea Pines as one of the first projects to combine golf and real estate development in a planned community, one of the first to use covenants and deed restrictions to protect the environment and one of the first to promote inter-generational recreation. His covenants called for homes to blend into their surroundings, bicycle trails and walking paths to be constructed, and land to be set aside for parks and nature preserves.

In 1980 an article in Signature Magazine noted "Charles Fraser helped change the vacation, retirement and living habits of a nation."  Fortune Magazine called Sea Pines "a rare holdout against tasteless commercialism." Sea Pines Resort was also the first recipient in the world of the American Institute of Architects' Citation of Excellence. Over the years, Hilton Head Island, Sea Pines Resort and many other Hilton Head Island communities have received numerous awards and recognitions.

Most recently Fraser will be inducted in the National Association of Home Builders hall of fame in Washington D.C.  The hall of fame was established in 1976 and its nearly 200 honorees include builders, developers, architects, financiers land planners and government administrators.

As we all enjoy the Hilton Head and the Heritage this week, we need to remember Charles Fraser and his vision that made Hilton Head Island real estate what it is today!!!
